Places of Interest

Quito, which was one of two cities to be declared the first World Heritage Sites 35 years ago, offers a multitude of attractions to keep visitors busy for days on end. Places of interest include the following: Parque Carolina (where you can find sports courts, cycle tracks, a skate park, a natural science museum, planetarium, Botanical Garden, vivarium and a boating lake); Plaza Foch (a popular plaza surrounded by bars and clubs); Casa de la Cultura Ecuatoriana (a theatre, museum and library); the Centro Historico (with its many squares, churches, museums and palaces); El Panecillo (a loaf-shaped hill overlooking the city); El Teleférico (a cable car that runs up the Pichincha mountain to 4,000 metres, from where you can walk along a number of trails); Mitad del Mundo (where the equator lies – there are also some interesting museums here); and, outside of Quito, Avenida de los Volcanes (Avenue of the Volcanoes – Cayambe, Cotopaxi, Tungurahua and Chimborazo).
